What Manorwood Do
Manorwood specialise in traditional architecture and construction. We are a design and build company focusing on the highest quality craftsmanship throughout West Sussex, Surrey and East Hampshire using traditional materials and techniques.
The company was formed by the two directors after almost 15 years of working together on various projects throughout the South East. With a combined experience of nearly 30 years and involvement in over 300 projects, Manorwood offers a solid and well managed team that provides a fully managed and personalised project.
We are not simply another building company, nearly all of our work is in period properties and many of which are listed buildings. We use qualified and experienced conservation specialists to carry out repair and restoration works and work closely with statutory bodies such as Historic England and local authority conservation officers, many of whom we have formed solid professional relationships with, to deliver high quality work that respects the original building and ultimately provides beautiful homes for our clients.
Where we carry out new build work it is nearly always based on traditional architecture and uses traditional materials, often with the highest standards of modern living inside. The same is true for our extension work and with a full design capability we create additions that respect and enhance the often historically important buildings that they adorn.
Whilst we are happy to work with clients and architects that already have a design in place and have secured the necessary permission, we are able to offer a full design and build package.
We have a full architectural capability in house and many of our buildings are our own designs. We also have a qualified historic building consultant in house, with an Msc in Historic timber building conservation and are often engaged to carry out full appraisals of listed buildings to prepare schedules of repairs and seek the necessary listed building consent. We often see this through by carrying out a fully supervised programme of works.
Because we work only within a relatively small area in West Sussex, Surrey and East Hampshire we have built relationships with conservation officers and have a solid understanding of local planning policies at all Local authorities within our areas.
We have our own planning consultant with many years of experience in rural planning and the complexities of projects within unique areas such as the South Downs national Park, conservation Areas and many Areas of Outstanding Natural beauty throughout the south.
Whether it is simply a small repair to a traditional building, an extension or modernisation of a period property or a full redevelopment of a farmstead we are well placed to help with any stage of the project and can offer a truly personalised turnkey build to the highest standards.
CONSERVATION & RESTORATION
We are a traditional building company and employ skilled and experienced specialists where necessary. Every Restoration job is assessed by a qualified historic building consultant and appropriate works are detailed and agreed with the necessary authorities before works proceed.
The benefits of using traditional techniques and materials are not often understood by many builders & we often find ourselves resolving problems caused by the use of unsympathetic materials.
Whilst we employ traditional methods where appropriate we also embrace modern technology for repairs and often hidden repairs using modern materials and techniques can minimise the visual impact of repairs.
What sets us apart from the many general builders is a solid understanding of traditional architecture and the use of traditional materials.
Lime mortars and plasters have unique qualities that allow building to move and breathe and their application needs to be carefully carried out by specialist contractors.
Handmade tiles and bricks are sourced to match originals where buildings are being extended or restored and even in our new build work the importance of high quality traditional materials in often sensitive settings is key to a successful project.
Oak framing is something we specialise in, having erected over 200 oak frames from simple cart sheds, through extensions and full manor houses. The difficulties of using large amounts of glazing with a natural material like oak needs to be fully understood and detailed and this is something we have developed well with specialist craftsman.
ATTENTION TO DETAIL
Detail is everything, just ask any of our clients how passionate we are about ensuring details are fully considered. Whether it be matching the grain on a piece of timber used on a repair or ensuring the glazing bars in windows are aligned with original timber work on a façade we pride ourselves on ensuring there is never a “that’ll do attitude”.
Handmade bricks and tiles, bespoke doors and windows, copper gutters and traditionally jointed oak frames are just some of the unique bespoke materials we use in projects. When their use is well considered and there installation is well executed the result is traditional stunning buildings that make beautiful homes.
We have many satisfied clients that would vouch for our sometimes rather obsessive urge to ensure every detail is considered and executed to the highest standards and we welcome potential clients to seek testimonials from previous clients.
We have worked with the Manorwood team on two occasions now in the process of restoring our grade 2 listed timber framed cottage. Some of the work has been essential structural repairs to the exterior of the house, which involved significant interaction with our local planning authority as well as the team’s advice from both structural and aesthetic/conservation perspectives.
They have also done a lot of internal work for us including restoring beams, original wooden floors, wattle and daub panelling and an inglenook fireplace. At every stage of both projects we have found them to be:-
- Accessible – we have always been able to get in touch quickly by email or phone and received helpful replies/updates.
- Flexible – whether working around other contractors such as electricians and plumbers or having to change the planned restoration technique on uncovering an unexpected complication!
- Thoughtful and reliable – the team arrive on time, are courteous when onsite and clear up as they work
Overall we have been extremely pleased with the quality of work they have done on our property, are planning to use them again for further work to other parts of the house and have no hesitation in recommending them.
